I have more than twenty years of experience in professional architectural practice, primarily within medium- and large-sized firms working on complex projects with large teams and layered organizational structures.

These environments are excellent places to learn. They expose architects to sophisticated project delivery, technical expertise, and the coordination required to realize significant work. What I often experienced, however, was a growing distance between design and construction. Decisions made during design were frequently separated from the realities of cost, constructability, craftsmanship, and the day-to-day process of building.

Over time, I became increasingly interested in closing that gap. Design is inherently iterative. Ideas develop through drawing, testing, revising, discussion, and return. Some designers engage this process more deeply than others, but it remains fundamental to the discipline.

As projects become larger and more complex, however, the process itself becomes more difficult to manage. Multiple stakeholders, funding sources, consultants, schedules, and approvals can compress the time available for exploration and refinement. The realities of delivering large projects often require a level of efficiency that can limit iteration. Over time, I found myself increasingly interested in working within a smaller environment. Not one without pressure or responsibility, but one where decisions could remain closer to the work itself and where the relationship between design and construction could be more direct.

Eventually, I decided to step out on my own, not to reject what I learned, but to take responsibility for it. Over time, I found myself wanting to work closer to the relationship between design and construction. Closer to the decisions being made, the people doing the work, and the realities of how buildings come together.

That is how Guidry Works began.

Guidry Works is an independent architecture and construction practice. We work carefully and stay close to our projects throughout the design and construction process. We believe buildings should serve people first, hold up over time, and make sense in how they are made. The practice is intentionally small, allowing us to remain directly involved in the work and attentive to the details that shape a project from beginning to end.

We provide full architectural services, from early concept through permitting and constructiondocuments. We design carefully and make sure the work is buildable and alignedwith budget. On projects we design, we also offer general contracting services. When architecture and construction are handled together, communication is clearer and responsibility is direct. In some cases,when the client and project are the right fit, we will consider general contracting independently. But our primary focus is building the work we design. Keeping architecture and construction aligned under one responsibility produces better results. We focus on houses, renovations, adaptive reuse, and small civic projects where this level of involvement matters.

We are interested in work that improves existing conditions or makes something practical better. We care about proportion, light, durability, and materials that age well. Our thinking is informed by literature, architecture, and art. We value structure, sequence, and experience over surface. We are interested in buildings that reveal themselves over time rather than announce themselves immediately.

Clarity comes first. We aim to be clear in drawings, contracts, budgets, and communication. Expectations should be understood. Costs should be transparent. Decisions should be explained. From clarity comes accountability. We take responsibility for both architecture and construction. We stay involved from the first conversation through completion and stand behind what we build. We also believe in being straightforward about constraints. Design involves trade-offs. Not every idea works. Honest conversations improve the work.

We continue refining how projects move through Becoming, Unfolding, and Being. We study proportion, structure, and how materials perform over time. We test ideas through both drawing and building. We expect the practice to grow. That growth may come through new types of projects, different delivery methods, or opportunities we cannot yet see. If a direction makes sense and aligns with how we work, we will pursue it. We are open to working in new ways, with new collaborators, and in different contexts. When the right people come together around a clear idea, strong work can take many forms. Growth for us is not about scale for its own sake. It is about staying attentive, adaptable, and committed to making good buildings with the right partners.
