800 N Rendon
The Rendon is the historic rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of a 1906 New Orleans public school, vacant since Hurricane Katrina, into 26 apartments. Located within the Esplanade Ridge Historic District, the project preserves the building’s original classrooms, wide corridors, stairways, and architectural details while introducing a new residential use. Four loft apartments extend into the previously unfinished attic, bringing new life to a building that had remained vacant for nearly two decades.
About the Project
Originally constructed in 1906 as McDonogh 31 School, the building remained vacant following Hurricane Katrina until its rehabilitation into 26 apartments. The new residential program works within the historic organization of the school, adapting former classrooms and cloakrooms while retaining original corridors, stairs, doors, transoms, trim, and wood floors. Four loft apartments occupy the previously unfinished attic, allowing the building’s former life as a school to remain legible within its new use.
