This project is a historic renovation of a long-vacant two-family residence in New Orleans’ Tremé neighborhood and our third residential development project. Abandoned since Hurricane Katrina, the house required an extensive reconstruction while preserving its historic street façade, roof structure, and brick chimneys. The original double was retained and rebuilt as two distinct residences within the dense fabric of the neighborhood.
About the Project
813–815 N. Tonti began as another abandoned Hurricane Katrina-era house, but its renovation ultimately became an important turning point in our work. Unlike the larger properties in Holy Cross, the historic double sits directly against the sidewalk within the dense urban fabric of Tremé. Its original front façade and roof structure were preserved, while severely deteriorated side and rear walls were completely rebuilt, the brick chimneys repaired, and the interiors reconstructed with new wood floors, building systems, kitchens, and baths.
The historic two-family configuration was maintained, with one side rebuilt as a one-bedroom, one-bath residence and the other as a two-bedroom, two-bath residence with an office and access to the rear yard. During construction, we assumed the role of general contractor and completed the project ourselves. It became our first experience bringing ownership, architecture, and construction under a single responsibility—an approach that would eventually become fundamental to Guidry Works.
